Young Climate Activists,
While there is a lot to be discouraged about in the last 150 days regarding climate and biodiversity activism, the question for young people is what to do about it. There are many views being circulated, some of which optimistically predict that the “green revolution” for replacement of fossil fuels cannot be stopped by an administration that considers climate change a hoax. There also are calls for protests and mass political actions to raise awareness, and to continue public promotion of climate and biodiversity goals.
There are other views too. Former vice-president Al Gore, a steadfast climate activist, suggests that the focus for climate and biodiversity action for the time being shift abroad. Gore advocates direct contact with organizations and communities in other countries that are actually doing something to further fossil fuel reduction and prevent further deforestation. One thing is for certain. Higher education is a critical if not essential requirement to bring about fundamental climate action and biodiversity preservation in the foreseeable future. The pursuit of careers in a variety of professions will help young people achieve sustainability for the earth and its ecosystems. Right now, however, under current political leadership, U.S. universities are under pressure to remove or reduce programs that address climate change directly. This is not the case in European Union centers of higher education. [needs article references]
Those who now are considering careers in professions that will advance climate action and biodiversity preservation might well consider studying abroad until the political climate in this country returns to climate sensibility. The University of Helsinki, Finland, for example, has a variety of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs such as Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Environmental Change and Global Sustainability.
